A magical day in Verona; The City of Love

‘Let’s stay the night in Verona’, my husband exclaimed. And my mind started imagining me staring at Juliet’s balcony. I was going to be in one of the world’s known, romantic city. Verona; that was one of Northern Italy’s hidden gems.

I knew very little about Verona. Except for the fact that this city was the set of three Shakespearean plays; Romeo and Juliet, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and The Taming of the Shrew. It amazed me how Shakespeare had a strong pull for this city. The limited information that I had, was enough to make me fall in love with Verona. Not to forget that Julius Caesar also vacationed here. The fact that got me even more thrilled.

Since we like to be quite adventurous on our road trips to Europe, we try staying at different kinds of accommodations to gain exciting new experiences. This time we decided to step off the beaten path, and try agritourism in Verona.

The placed we booked was in the countryside just off the highway. The surrounding was breath-taking. Lush green fields, pebbled narrow roads and mid-century Renaissance architecture houses. There was life and music just like the Italians love it, in almost every farm house that we passed.

As we arrived at Fior di Pesco. The owner was there to receive us. It was our first experience of Agri tourism, and we were already pretty enchanted. A beautiful farm house in a lovely setting with the medieval feel, people enjoying their happy hour sitting in the greens, light music, swings for the kids in one corner, clean fresh air breezing away. This seemed to be a place where the owners nurtured their land with passion and dedication. Offering their guests, the simple yet grand beauty of nature.

The owner, in his Veronese accent, seemed quite hospitable. He guided us to our rooms which came with a beautifully decorated terrace and garden views. Our room came with an extra smaller room which quite was a surprise for us, while the kids had another separate room to themselves. We enjoyed the night, relaxing, sitting viewing the great property and the beautiful weather.

The next morning, we headed to the farm fresh breakfast hosted by the owners. Everything on the table was almost homemade and organic. That was the beauty of this breakfast. From the croissants, cakes, scones, juices, eggs, fresh apricots to the variety of jams. It was a feeling of being home, in fact even better.

Later we enjoyed discovering and roaming around the property in the gilded light of the day. This was the best way to get to know the farm life, by living it ourselves and getting into its rhythms.

It was time to bid farewell to this magical place but only for now. Because truth be told, I really had an itch to discover more of this gorgeous city.

After this visit, I was even more fascinated by Verona than ever before. And I hope one day I will be able to explore more of this city’s rich culture, beautiful architecture and intriguing history.
